Identificata da alcuni studiosi con l'antica Apenestae, conserva i segni di un passato glorioso.
I bastioni dell'antico castello sovrastano la cittadina che si affaccia sul mare.
Oltre alla cattedrale, alla porta medioevale si può vedere la roccia "Chiang amer" sulla quale Dragut pirata turco nel 1554 uccise i viestani che gli opposero resistenza. Nei pressi della chiesetta di S. Maria di Merino sono stati riportati in luce i resti di una abitazione di eta romana.
